JOURNAL OF THE WEEK.

A temporary lull appears to have succeeded to the stirring* occurrences of a few weeks bygone. Affairs bave assumed, with the weather, a more serene and cheerful aspect. Still, in a mercantile point of view, there is a fair proportion of activity. Our imports this week are not inconsiderable; we shall be glad when our wool and other exports shall in some degree balance them. We regret to have to notice, however, an accident which happened yesterday to Mr. Boweu, of Christchurch, who fell from his horse in the neighbourhood of Gollau's Bay, and sustained a fracture of the arm. CASUALTIES BY FIRE. At the public meeting held on Monday last at the " Mitre" to consider the steps to be taken for guarding against the ravages of fire in the town of Lyttelton, a Committee was appointed, consisting of Messrs. Alport, Fitzgerald, Bearish, Pratt, Longden, Bannister, Taylor, Compton, Davis, Wakefield, Tullooli, and Read, to carry out the objects of the meeting in detail, by collecting subscriptions, and enrolling volunteers to act as a Fire Brigade. This Committee held their first meeting on Tuesday evening, and after discussing the merits of the various means employed in cases of fire, came to the determination to appoint from among themselves three sub-committees, one of which should draw up a list qf the householders of Lyttelton, classified with regard to their degree of danger' from fire; the second should endeavour to ascertain the sense of the inhabitants on the subject how many were willing to subscribe toward 8 the purchase of apparatus; &c,, and who would join as volunteers in a Fire Brigade for mutual protection and assistance ; while the third should endeavour to ascertain what assistance could be obtained by bringing into operation any ordinances for the pre-ventv-n of thatched roofs, dangerous chimneys, and other defective methods of building calculated tQ increase the risk of lire.
