One word upon Mr. Dampier's letter, appearing in another column, in reference to the broad hints it contains of undue interference with the matter appearing in the Lyttelton Times, by certain partisans, and the plainer accusation of our having given to the public a garbled and one-sided report of the proceedings at the meeting of Land-Pur-chasers on the 25th June. We find Mr. Dampier consoling himself for what he considers the injustice and partiality of that report, by an implicit faith in the good sense of the colonists present, and of a discerning public, who would readily discover the violent party spirit of Mr. Brittan and Mr. Fitzgerald. With defending others, we have nothing to do, it will be sufficient to accord them the same privilege of which Mr. Dampier has availed himself in forwarding his letter to us for insertion. But as regards our own report of the meeting alluded to, we do most positively deny any such control as that referred to by Mr. Dampier. Not only were the notes of the meeting taken without the slightest previous knowledge of the facts brought forward, or even of the events which led to its being called, but they were taken as accurately asthe complex and conflicting statements then made would allow, and from them a
report was drawn up and sent to press without the aid or interference of any other person, of either party, and also without any impression on our minds other than the impressions produced by the meeting itself. We also, with our correspondent, are content to rest upon the good sense of the colonists present, who were at liberty then and there W their votes to express sympathy or otherwise with his position, a liberty of which the greater part availed themselves. The decision given by them was recorded in our account of the meeting, but we forbore to express any opinion of our own upon the subject, or even to speculate upon the bearing of that decision on the personal acts of Mr. Dampier.
