The United Service Gazette states:—" We have reason to believe that a circular will shortly be issued by the Colonial Secretary to the several Colonial Governments to the effect that, in future, each colony must support its own military establishments, or the authorities at home will deem it expedient to withdraw their protective force.
The Scottish Press states, that the Hon. Stuart Wortley has intimated to his constituents in Bute, that it is not his intention to renew the measure for legalising marriages with a deceased wife's sister; and that, in the event of another member of the House takingit up, he will use his endeavours to get Scotland exempted from its operation.
The Census.— The official routine preparatory to taking the census of the population of Great Britain on March 31,1831, has now commenced, and a suite of offices has been taken in commodious houses in Craig's-court, CharingCross, whither some of the clerks of the regis-trar-general's department, Somerset House,"experienced in the duties of the census, have proceeded, acting under the superimendance of Mr. Farr and Mr. Horace Mann, the newly appointed assistant commissioner. The census was last taken and calculated under the direction of a commissioner at Somerset House, and took upwards of three years to complete, the results being published in a compendious blue book.
The aggregate amount realized by the sale of the Kino- o f Holland's collection is said to be ],222,837 florins—about 108,000/. Of those pictures which have found their way into this country, the purchases for the Marquis of Hertford amounted to 15,500/. Mr. Woodburn, our readers will have seen, is the largest buyer of drawings. A contemporary states that he bought 108 lots at ti cost" of about 36,700 florins.
