AUCKLAND,

This Day. A man named Holland was yesterday charged with wounding Mrs Olsen and remanded till the 8th inst. An attempt was made on Monday night to rob the Post and Telegraph office at Pukekohe, but the would be robbers were unsuccessful. Isaac Gardener, the bushman from Mercury Bay, who was recently admitted into this hospital suffering from internal injuries received while jacking logs, is recovering. Large numbers of excursionists have been booked for the trip to Tauranga, and White Island, by the s.s. Wellington tomorrow. Hon. John Bryce, M.H.R., is at present in Auckland to consult with Sir E. Witaker re the Rusden libel case. Speculation has been scratched for all engagements at the Autumn Meeting. Necklace and Woodnymph are now first fovourites [favourites] for the Easter Handicap. Amongst the list of the New Legislative Council is the name of Gr. B. Morris, Esqr., the present M.H.R. for Tauranga.
