This Day. The cheap railway excursions are beeoming very popular; another has been arranged to Te Aroha, return tickets at cheap rates can now be had available up to the end of April. An excursion to Taranaki advertised for -to-day has had to be postponed till tomorrow owing to the bad state of the Manukau bar. A large number of natives are in town to-day profusely decorated with beads and crosses, members of the Boman Catholic Mission, from Hokianga. The residence of Alex. Sutherland, jockey, was burned down yesterday morning. Nothing was saved, the family oaly escaped with difficulty. There is a strike n »w onin Auckland Tobacco Factory re tne rate of wages. The fire at Winks and Hall's yesterday afternoon did a great amount of damage before it was suppressed, the whole of the two upper stories were destroyed alon«' with the contents. Two firemen namedbHeaps and Beake fell from a ladder during the progress of the fire and sustained severe injuries. The loss amounts to about £2,000. It originated through the carlesness of two employees playing with matches. Another fire occured at 11 o'clock last night in the premises of Thamas TL11, grocer, Wellesley street, but was quickly suppressed before much damage was done. This seems to be the season of fires. His Excellency the Governor arrived here yesterday from his visit to Ausralia. He leaves for Wellington tomorrow.
