Muliuvi in parvo. Tuesday, March 18th, 1885. The Kegatta yesterday was a big success. A shop and dwelling-house in Cashel Street, Christchurch, were burned down on Sunday. The latter was insured for £525 in the National ofhce. The heaviest gale ever known in the Opunake district was that which passed over on Saturday last. Courtneys Hall was destroyed. We are informed that the Yic, which won the open sailing boat race, yesterday, has been purchased by Mr E.S. Western, for the sum of £20., The Cricket Match Auckland v Tauranga, took place in the Domain yesterday, and icsulted in a victory for Auckland. > ■ A small house on the wharf at Coromandel, the property of John Harney, was burned down on Monday morning. lt is supposed to have been the work of au incendary. CharlesE. Belcher, lately employed in the Educatioual Department at Wellington, has been sentenced to four weeks imprisonment for stealing four books, valued at 13/6, from the Government Buildings. A race not on the Kegatta Club's Programme took plaee yesterday, or rather a trial of speed between the S.S. Kati Kati and K.M.S. Douglas, when at the heads the former was about f- of a mile behind the Douglas, but the Kati Kati was the first to reach the Wharf. W e hear on the best authority that Mr G. Arnold Ward, as Secretary of the Tauranga Rifle Club, has called an Extraordinary (ieneral Meeting, at 8 p.m. this evening, re "Kussian invasion of Tauranga." W e congratulate the residents of this township that such energetic measures are being taken on their behalf.
