Thttrsday, Maech 11th, 1885. The publie school at Greymouth is closed on account of bad drains causing siekness among pupils. A starch factory capable of turning out two tons per week is in operation near Whanganui. The starch is made from wheat. Times cannot be so bad in Dunedin after all. A telegram says that a total of £38,399 was put through the totalisator at the recent Eorbury meeting. The Wellington Harbour Board have resolved not to use the electric light on the wl arves on the ground of cost. Inspector Goodall of Wellington says it is ahoi.t a hundred times niore diificult to secure a conviction und^r the present Licensing Act than under the old Act. It is estimated that the South Australian wheat yield this year will average nine bushels nine pounds per acre. This will be an exceptionally good harvest. We would like to see our local team of cricketers going in for more practice so as to be in trim for the match on Tuesday. W e hope to see a full muster on the ground on Saturday. The Eoresters' ball on Tuesday next promises to be a great success. Tickets are being much sought after, and preparations are going on in all directions. The programme at the Mutual Improvement Association this evening will consist of orignal papers by Messrs E. Hoben and Macaulay, and recitations by other members. During the nine months ending Deeembsr last, nearly a quarter of a million sheep were exported from Hawke's Bay, including 72,000 frozen carcases. There was also a large increase in tallow, tinned meats, and other exports.
