This Day. A maori done the Soudan slope yesterday, letting in . certain tradesmen and his land-lady to the tune of about £90. A cheap excursion train will run from Auckland to Te Awamutu, on St. Patrick s day, to enable the citizens to see the races at Kihikihi, and the Waikato Horticultural Show. The contract was signed yesterday by the successful tenderers for the erection of the Art Gallery and Pree Library. The work is to be commenced at once, and it is expected that the structure will be finished in about eighteen months. Colonel Booth, son of Greneral Booth is expected to arrive here shortly from Sydney.
The new St. Patrick' s Cathedral is to be consecrated on next Sunday morning, by the Bishops Moran and Redwood, The winner of the Bowen prize, at the New Zealand University, this year is Miss Margaret Lorimer, of Canterbury College. A fire occurred at Shelly Beach last night, by which the stable and outhouses, on the preraises belonging to Mr Campbell were destroyedConsiderable interest is now being manifested in Auckland re the defence of the harbour and city, in the event of a war with Russia. Yarious suggestions are offered. One gentleman here has offered £100, and several others have promised smaller sums.
