Thuiisday March 5th, 1885 A comprehensive Puhlic Health Bill is heing prepared in New Sonth Wales. The Duke of Connaught is said to he anxious of getting the Governorship of New South Wales, hut Mr Gladstone is opposed to the idea. We are pleased to learn that Miss Alice Darby, of this town, has heen appointed assistant teacher at one of the Thames schools.
Eaces will be held at Dargaville tomorrow. The Tauranga Llcensing Committee meet tomorrow. Mr Bodell advertises fifty head of dairy stock for sale. Native disturbance on the Strand yesterday. Eour arrested. The Native Lands Conrt opened here yesterday, before Judge Olarke. A paper on the late General Gordon at the Mutuallmprovement Assoqjation this evening. "Visitors welcome. Captain Edwin wired at 1 26 p.m.— "Expect bad ^weather between North and W est, and South-west, glass further fall, and rising after twelve hours from now. The New Zealand Eefrigerating Company, Dunedin, are declining any further freight arrangements for frozen meat for the London market for the present. The native population of Fiji appears to have increased by 33 during 1884, but this increase is less than that of the previous year, which was 114, and that again was less than in the previous year, when the number was 204. The Eev. W. Laws, "lecturing at Melbourne on New Guinea, said the climate would prevent the country ever becoming suitable for Europeans. The natural preductions of New Guinea were natich exaggerated. Only some parts were suitable for cattle rearing. At the Police Court this morning, before H. W. Brabant E. M., Heihei and Eangi, two natives, were charged with being drunk and disorderly, they pleaded not guiltv, but were convicted andfined 10/- and costs 7/-, dr in default 48 hours in Tauranga jail. Eawhara, was charged with assaulting the Sergeant of Police, and Te Pere with hindering him in the execution of his duty. The charge against Te Pere was withdrawn. Eawhara was found guilty and fined 20/- and costs, or in default 48 hours in jail.
