SYDNEY,

February 23. When the s.s. Ringarooma arrived yesterday from Auckland, it was discovered the steward was suffering from emallpox. All the passengers had disembarked, but fifteen were subsequentlv secured and sent to quarantine. Several other passengers cannot be traced and are still at large. The vessel has been plaeed in quarantine.

Objections have been urged to the legality of the action of the Government in despatching New South Wales troops to the Soudan, and a petition to the Governor against the expedition is being prepared.
