February 18. A telegram from Lord Wolseley announces that a body of rebels, aeting as escort to a quantity of guns and supplies being sent from Khartoum to E1 Metemmeh, came up with a British detaehment, which was about eight miles from Gubat. The rebe^s opened fire on the convoy, which was responded to by the British, and after an hour's skirmish the enemy were driven off and retired. The Queensland Government, ha\ e offered to send volueteers te join the Australian Brigade which is being forwarded to the Soudan. It is considered that their off'er is oertain to be accepted.' The first batch of reinforcements has sailed for the Soudan. Five thousand Arabs are reinforcing E1 Metemmeh. It has transpired that the Governmont have deeided to decline the offers of Canadian and Yiotorian troops for the Soudan, as it is believed they could not arrive at the scene of operation in time to be of service.
