Multum in parvo. Wednesday February 18th, 1885 To-day is Ash W ednesday . Fruit stealing is very prevalent just now. Service will be held at Holy Trinity Church this evening. The new Government Printing Offiee at Wellington is to cost £22,000. Property tax defaulters are to b ) summoned at once. Wellington Yolunteers are goiilg ; into camp at Island Bay. The hotels at Ohinemutu have been erowded of late, and "shake-downs" have been the order of the day. The Thames rr ail coach had a full compliment of passengers this morning again . The concert tomorrow evening promises to be very successful. A good programme has been prepared, and tickets are selling rapidly. Westport Coal Co. had at the end of 1884 a net credit balance of £1,049 4slldtobe carried forward to next year. No dividend was declared, however, lt is pleasing to note the steady increase in the fruit industry. Yesterday Mr W. Menzies shipped several cases of peaches to Auckland. Gee-up Taurangi?. We hear that Mr R. T. Booth has altered his mind and will not visit Tauranga just yet. He is going to Nelson then to Australia, but will be baek in a few months, when he may be expected in this town. In days of yore Tauranga was noted as a clean town. It is not so no.w. The drainage of the Strand is a disgrace to our local authorities and calls for iinmediate improvement. What a treat the N ative Minister must have had on Saturday last, the "perfume of the Strand" was great on that day, at the end of the Town Wharf. 1
