LONDON,
February 7. Accounts to hand respecting Sir Charles Wilson's expedition from Metemmeh to Khartoum state that to hina tlie palace at the latter place appears to be wreeked, and it was the general opinion that General Gordon has been killed; but the Mandi's messenger, who came to Sir Charles Wilson with a summons to surrendel', asserted that General Gordon was alive. February 8. Information from Khartoum has been received that the English troops under Sir Charles Wilson approached to within two hundred yards of the rebels, and that only the flags of the latter could then be'seon. Their batteries kept up a hot shelling, but the troops were compelled to retreat, and this was effected partly by strategy. Lord Wolsely states that the Shukri tribes have joined the Mahdi ; theiefore both banks of the Nile are hostile.
