This Day. The Royal Mail Steamer Zealandia left for San Francisco last night. The inqniry into the charges made by the patient John Smith against the House Surgeon, Dr Bond, was comtnenced yesterday by the House Committee of the Hospital. In addition to Mr Smith's first statement that was made before the Greneral. Cornmittee, he narrated other instanees of alleged cruelty and ill treatment to which he had been subjected to. He was cross examined by Dr Bond at some lengtb after which the inquiry was adjourned until this morning. The Representatives of|the Auckland and Thames Fire-brigades, who took part in the recent Fire-brigade competition at Dunedin, were passengers by the Hawea yesterday, tkey were enterlained at a dinner in the evening, when statement s were made by Supt.Hughes and Capt Pieree (Thames Fire-brigade) and several members of the teams as to the competition at Dunedin, and the reason for Auckland and Thames withdrawing.

It was stated last evening that an Auckland tradesman suddenly disappeared, it is believed that he has gone in the Zealandia to San ' Friseo. He was seen in his place of business at about five o'elock yesterday afternoon, and at a later hour on board the mail steamer.
