Friday, January 30th, 1885. Tbe s.s. Douglas is expected to arrive here tomorrow. We are informed tbat a service of song, and lecture is conterqptated in connection with the local branch of the Blue Ribbon Army. The Takapuna Eace Meeting did not take place yesterday on account of the unfavorable state of the weather, bu c was postponed untill tomorrow It is rumored in press eircles that M r Braeken is to hecome proprietor of the Dunedin "Evening Herald," and that it will hecome the organ of the present party. Yolhraeht's JSTew Zealand Tohacco Company, Auckland, will commence operations next week. Eourteen or fifteen cigar makers will he employed for the present. Sir William Des Ycex, whose term of ofB.ee as Govenor of Fiji has expired, accompanied hy Lady Des Yoex, arrived at Auckland from Levuka hy the Arawuta on W ednesday, en route for England. The s.s City of Sydney, with the January English mails, left San Francisco for Auckland on the 19th instant, heing oue day later than the timetable date. The s.s Australia, with the J anuary colonial mails, arrived at San Franeisco from Auckland on the 25th instant, two days in advance of the time-table date. The s.s. Katikati left for Plate Islandon Wednesday at midnight, with a numher of ex mrsionists on hoard, and called in at Maketu for some others, leaving again at 5 30 a.m. and proeeeded to the island where the pleasure-seekers cast their fishing-lines and succeeded in landing some fine hapuka, hut the weather turning out unfavorahle they left for home at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon arriving at the Town Wharf at ahout 6 o'clock wetter if not wiser men.
