Multuni in parvo. _____ "Satuiiday," J anuary 1 7 th, 1885. Gilded shillings are being passed for sovereigns, at the Thames. We beg to remind parents andguardians that the District School re-opens on Monday morning. Nominations for the vacant seat in the Borough Council takes place on Monday at noon. Several gentleman left here this morning per Staffa for the purpose of attending the Whakatane raees. The A. C. numbering about 120 offieers and men are now engaged in the construction of the Taupo- Whanganui road. The Salvationists at Narracoote, South Australia, whilst holding a procession recently, were attacked by about 300 persons. A scrimmage ensued, the Army being severely mauled. One female had several ribs broken, and others were more or less injured.^ The report of the Royal Commission on the unemployed question in Christchurch hae been received by the Government. A large mass of evidence has been taken, but the report itself is said to be informal, and will be sent back to the Conimissioners to be set right. The famous Hungarian violinist, Signor Remenyi, arrived in Dunedin early last week, and at once inaugurated a series of six concerts in the Lyceum Hall. He is under engagement to Messrs Ringnold and Allison, and will be piloted through the colony by Mr Erank Weston. * The New Zealand Timber Company have commenced the erection of an addition to their mill at Preemans Bay. Temporary machinery will be erected there so that the business of the company can be carried on as usual while the new premises are being erected, in place of those destroyed by fire on Saturday last.
