Multum in parvo. FbIDAY, J AiYUABY 9 th, 1885. It is proposed to erect a beetroot sugar factory in the Waikato. Stephen Martin of Tauranga, filed a petition in bankruptoy on Wednesday last. Dr Stevens returned per s.s. Wellington this morning, and we are informed that he intends again taking up his practice here. The meeting at the Town Hall, Melborne, on the Pacific annexation question, was attended by four thousand persons. Thames is likely to be well represented in the champion whaleboat race at the approaching Auckland Kegatta. Two crews are vigorously training for the event. For falsely sweaing that a police sergent and constable were drunk on duty, a man named Alfred Payne was sentenced to 12 months hard labor, at Christchurch, last Tuesday. There was a large attendance of lady visitors at the M. I. Association last evening. The new President(Kev Mr Slade) took his seat for the first time. Five gentlemen were proposed for membership. There is some talk of selecting a cricket team to play against Kobinson's on their return to Auckland, from the South. Such a match would no doubt prove interesting. Kobinson's team commenced its match against W ellington, on the Basin Keserve yesterday. Mrs McCandlish's little daughter was missed on W ednesday evening, and although search was made about the neighbourhood during the whole of the night, no signs of her could ^ be be found and matters were begining to look serious, when yesterday morning she was discovered sleeping peacefully under a tree a short distance from the house.
