This Day. The attendance at the Elerslie racecourse on Saturday, to witness the final struggle for the Steeplechase, was unexpectedly large aad a very keen interest was manifested in it. The race was won by Mr Waston's Linwood, by a neck from Mr Maxwell' s Sunray, amid great exciteinent. It is stated that the Home authorities intend to spend some millions in the defence and fortification of the coaling stations for the Navy. Elaborate preparations are being madeat Waiwera for the reception of Sir Julius Yogel. A cottage has been fitted up in the most luxurious manner so that he may hot have to ascend any stairs. Sir Julius Vogel arrived at Waiwera this morning at eleven o'clock.

r At the Police Courton Saturday, W. Taylor who attempted to cornmit suicide at Makarua by cutting his throat was again brought up, and seems to have recovered from the effects, except that he has he has not quite recovered his reason. He was further remanded for the purpose oi being examined bv two inedical men. Ine score of Mr J. H. Glover, Commisson agsnt, was broken into on saturday night or Sunday morning, several boxes were rummaged and searched and the goods stolen. The store was oceupied by passengers luggage, etc., so that the articles stolen are not yet aeertained. Mr Glover left the premises at two o'clock on Saturday afternoon, when all appeared to be right, yesterday the side door was found to be open and information was given to the police. This store jias been broken into three or four tirnes during the past few months.
