Mr Gfreenshield received a letter from Suva yesterday telling him that his son Harry (who uaed to bo wita Mr Donald, ship Cha ldler, of Aucklml,) had beea dangeriously wo ande 1 o i b rardthe Agnes D mabl by a native who struck him on the heal with a bar of iron. On New Year's eve a disturban -e ' r >so on board the Laly Jocelyn, between two^quartermasters named Keid a id Smith, as result of the altercation Reid took his knife and striking Smith w onnded him in the hand, their c mina les interfered and quelled the scufflo o i deek- Smith said to Reid that the dirfieulty was not ended, and he would have mere to say about it when on s i >re. Reid agaia gofc the knife and c L'? Smith aeross the foroarm when Roburts, oue of the passengers, interposed and took knife from Reid and threw it overboard. Smith has sinee bem arrested oa a charge of unlawfnlly and malieiously wounding Smith. Accused was brought up yesterday, and remanded. On New Year's night a man named George Bettans suffering from the effects of drink jumped off the Qneen Street Wharf, into the sea. He was
reseued by Mr Hawks, watermam and taken into custody on a charge of drunkenness. He was brought up at the Police Court yesterday, and remanded for medical examination. The last days racing of the Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting was very successful. The weather was splendid, the great event being the Steeplechase. This was the best contested race we have had since the days of Agent and Perfume, but unfortunately ended in a fiasco. Clarence j running grand, whieh he always does i won easily, but the wrong course was cleared for him and he did not win. Sunray nearly quartjr of amile behind picked out the right course, and his owner lodged a protest, the Stewards affcer hearing the evinence declared the Steeplechase no race, and it has to be run again afcfour o'clock this afternoon. The Lad is a cripple, and unable to I stari. It is not probable that many horses will start in tlie race. Selling Race — Revolver, 1 ; Larry, 2 ; Nemesis, 3 ; dividend, £2 3s. Pree Handicap — S >u'-wester, 1 ; Minerva, 2 ; Fishwoma i, 3. The largest number of people were present ever seen on the third day. John Patterson, run over at the races on New Yeai*;s Dav, died at tea minutes past one to-day.
