THE LITTLE UN.

Multum in parvo.

Friday, JajNiUAey 2nd, 1885. ' Ilail fully og incbes in circuniference, fell at Oponui, yesterday. Tbe Weseleyan Sunday-school picnic was held at Mr J. Brown's farm, yesterday, tbere was a large number present, all of wbom appeared to enjoy tliemselves tboroughly.

Tlie newspaper tlie Gisborne Telepbone has ceased publication. The scboolmaster at Paeroa is about to be romoved. Watcli-night service was beld at the Wesleyan Church, and at Trinity Church, on Wednesday night. Tliere was a large attendance at the latter. The TJ. S. coryette Iroquois arrived at Auckland, 011 Priday last, and will prot ably stay there until January 10th, wlien she is to sail for Chili. The excursion to the Mount, per s.s. Katikati, yesterday, was not very largely patronised, no doubt on aecount of so many counter attractions. Heyman, known as the hangman, has been discharged on the charge of bugulary, preferred against him at Wellington, and his conipanion A puroa a niaori, was conmiitted for trial. The picnic in connetion with the Presbytei'ian Sunday-school, eveiituated yesterday, at Oponui, and. was veiy successful. Everybody enjoyed tliemselves to their hearts content in spite of the hailstorm in the afternoon. A man named George Johnstone, manager of C. D. Moore's store, at Winton, Invercargill, committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in the bush township. Hehad been drinking heavily. The Church of Englaud Sundayschools treat was held at Yatton, yester day, and was a big success. Danceing and games took place in the afternoon. The seholars, their parents and friends, returned home about dusk, having spent a most enjoyable clay. It is romoured that the Kamo Collery Compaiiy intend running to this place, an excursion, per s.s. Waitaki, from Auckland. We have no doubt if they really intend doing so, but what they would be well patronised, if the fare was reasonable, as this vessel was a favorite when running here for the TJnion Company.
