AUCKLAND,
This Day. The well known race-horse "Welcome Jack caught cold, on the Cup day, and has since been suffering from inflamation of the lungs. The horse is in a most critical eondition.
The New Zealand Herald issued a third reprint of last Saturdays paper. There is a great demand, and the publication now reaches 40,000 copies. The Turkish baths here have been used during the past year, by 3240 gentlemen, 500 ladies, and 62 young children. Yesterday a house and shop at Northcote, occ upied by Mr Bird, was destroyed by fire. A small quantity of furniture was saved. The stock, consisting of boots, was insured for £20 in the South British, and the furniture for £30 in the same office. Thebuilding was owned by Mr Tliorne, solicitor and was insured for £100 in the South British. The origin of the fire is unknown, but is supposed to have been accidental. The dead body of a man was found in Orakei bay, this morning, the body is quite unrecognisable, and is very much decomposed; the eyes are eaten out, and there is no hair on the head.
