THE LITTLE UN.
Multum in parvo. Monday, December 22nd, 1884. The cutter Leo, 32 tons, J. Dowd, arrived this morning, from Auckland. We are very sorry to hear that Miss Allely, assistant teacher at the District School is seriously ill. To-day is the longest day, Midsum-mer-day, but in narne only, riot as regards the weather. Mr and Mrs Shaw and family, left here for Katikati, per speeial coach 011 Saturday, to take up their residence there. A man named Charles Osborne, was ldlled at Masterton, on Thursday last, by falling off a loaded dray, he kaves a -wife and three children. The Good Templars picnic, on Box-ing-day, promises to be a great suecess. Tickets are going off lapidly. Full particulars will be found in our advertising columns. "We are informed that a robbery was eomitted 011 Saturday last, by twro i young rnen, sons of respectable resiilents here, and that information has been laid against the offenders. Some little damage was done to the telegraph line near Te-Puke 011 Saturday evening, by lightning, two spans of wire being partially fused, and oue rendered useless. Severalpersonsliad narrow eseapes from the electric fluid. The residents of this district will remember the amount of good done by the late Mr W . P. Snow, for the Natives in the Rotorua district, by inducing them to become total-abstain-ers, and geneially improving their moral standing. These good works ' are being continued by the deceased gentleman's friends. Mrs A. R. Snow mother of Mr Snow, and MrsW. P. Snow, his widow, arrived by the last mail steamer, from America, to supervise the good works he inaugurated.
> . ■ -Ar. IWI We are informed tliat the cutter Leo whicli left Auckland nearly 3 weeks ago, for the purpose of proceeding to White Island, for sulpher, arrived at the latter place ahout the time the workmen reached Tauranga, and as there was nobody on the island she eould nor procure her cargo. The District School sports take place tomorrow. A day of fun is in store for the youngsters. Trinity Church eh )ir has greatly improved under the ahle management ofMr Harstone. We notice that an aldition is mahe to the cfcoir hy the introductihn of several young lads who Mr Harstone has had in training for some little time, this will greatly strengthen the effect of the choral portion of the service. We have to apoligise to our readers for the non-appearance of our usual hatch of telegrams. Through some cause of which we know not they have not yet turnen up. To-day is the last day on which the Property-tax can be paid without incurring the ten per cent. fine. Roll up hefore eight o'clock and save the j: enalty . Sports are to be held at Ohinemutu o i Boxing-day, for which there are numerous entries. The affair promises to be yery successful. It is a singular fact that America is indebted to Pompeii for the great industry of canning fruit, when the excavations were j ust begun a party of Cincinnettians found, in what had been the pantry of a bouse, jars of preserved figs. One was opened, and they were found to be fresh and good. Investigation showed that the fruit had been put into the jars in a heated state, aD aperture left for the steam to escape, and then sealed with wax. The hint was taken, and the next year the canning of fruit was started in America.
Capt. Edwin wired at 2 20 p.im > 'Wind between west and southwest, and southeast, glass f urther rise, and weather colder, and poor tides." It appears that more than £11,000 sterling worth of silver is wasted every year in the course of the cireulation of crowns, half-crowns, florins, shillings, and sixpences.
