Tenders for the eonstruction of locomotiyes in New Zealand will be called within two rnoaths. There are fourty-four candidates from North Canterbury for the New Zealand TJniversity inatriculation examination, which has commenced at Christchurch. Sir Julius Vogel's memorandum 011 f ederation and the South Sea Islands has been. forwarded by His Excellency the Grovernor to the Secretary of State for the Colonies. Two excursions to the West Coast Sounds have been arrang'ed by the Union Company for the holiday season. and the magnificent steamer Tarawera is to run on both. Tho first excursion leaves Port Chalmerson Saturday, 17 January, 1885, and the second on the 26th of the same moiith. It is anticipated that each trip will occupy 8 days from Port Chalmersj, during which time the most beautiful of the Sounds will be visited, and special facilities will be afforded for amueements of a yaried character.
