KING WINS KING'S PRIZE.
CARTER (LINTON) FOURTH IN AGGREGATE TRENTHAM, Last NightThe King’s Prize 1928 has been lost and won. D. Roots (Patea) who was successful with 519 last year did hot got into the second fifty. After a dull, cold morning a bright afternoon and a front wind cheating to light w T cre the conditions the finalists had to content: with. When the first 25 wont down there was a large gallery including the Minister of Defence and Col. Bridges representing General Young. Interest m this shoot centred in the highest score for the Rifle Cup K. Lovell scored 47 and later J. Carter equalled* the shoot off Lovell won by a point. King drew target number 12, each shot being watched by a. large crowd. His first sighter 2 was refused, but his second 4 was accepted. His card read; 4555535544—45. James who w-as a point behind did not do so well finishing with 42. His card read 4445355552—42, and as McIvor failed badly registering four misses King was champion and chaired off the range amidst the enthusiasm of supporters. Last year Roots made a similar scoro to King in the final beating Kerr (Ashburton) by four points, having gained 8. O’Donnell and Carter tied for third place, the latter being beaten by a point. CHAMPION TEAMS ’ MATCH. The Champion Teams’ Match, fired this morning, resulted in a win for Petono No. 1 by the narrow ma t gin of one point. Their score was 472, Wanganui No. .1 were second with 471, and Napier third with 4GS. Strangely enough, the three leaders for the Belt were included in the three winning teams, and their performances were •watched with interest. E. 8. King, the actual leader, put on a 5)7 out of 105. P. H. James (Napier) put on 94, and W. Melver (Pctonc) put on an 89. A good performance w r ns registered by Suburbs No. 1 over 500 yards, three members of the team —W. J. H. Haase, R. E. Hester and F. McLean —all putting cm possibles.

On vhnt occasion the team .con sistod of A. Ballinger, W. Ballinger, W. Randell, C Hale and J. Wilson. To-day it was a neck and neck struggle with Wanganui. Petone required 27 to win. The sixth shot just got on the target but three for the last won the match. Through some misunderstanding the North v. South Island match was not fired. At the conclusion of the shooting prizes were presented by the Ministci of Defence. Rifleman King commenced shooting in Wanganui in 1911, has attended a number of National Meetings and on the last five occasions has secured a place in the final Fifty. In 1925, Caldwell’s year, King finished third and nineteenth last year. He won the North Island Championship in 1912 and a number of Provincial Championships. Captain McLeod, manager of the Australian team, expressed the opinion there were not sufficient flags .on the range to gauge the force and direction of the wind. He also advocates a glass aperture rifle for more accurate sighting.
