CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS CONTEST. CLOSE MATCH AT SHANNON. In connection with the selecting ot the champion rinks this year to compete at the Champion of Champion contests ot the Manawatu Centre to he hold at. Palmerston North the area has bon divided into, sect ions. Shannon is in No. 2 section which includes Otaki, Levin, ami Poxton. On. Wednesday afternoon the first try-out, which is on the sudden death principle, took place on the Shannon green when the representatives of the Poxton and Levin Clubs met. The rinks were as follows: — Poxton: Walton, Hayes, Huntley, Wall (skip). Levin; Monk. Percy, Hull, Clements (skip). p , In tho earlv stages ot the game r oxton established a substantial lead at one time, leaving an advantage ot lb to 5. The Levin players then commenced to get the strength of the green and by good bowling they got level with the Poxtonites at the 18th head, the score being 18 all. The 19th head saw Poxton again taking the lead with three up, but the 20th was Levin’s with a two, this leaving Poxton with a lead of one on the commencement of the final head. On the skips going clown to play Poxton was lying the shot, but. Clements was taking no chances ami by a. good drive made a dead head of it. Both rinks were now right on their wame, making every effort for a victory, and the head that followed was a good one, with Levin lying flu* shot when, the skips tried conclusion.
