Some 185 additional miles of main highways arc declared by a supplementary Gazette issued on Saturday, pilose gf'M streets si(tuatejd in *>qVoughs wall a population of under (5000, which are not eligible to participate in the proceeds from the petrol tax. The object of the Order in Council gazetted is to place the boroughs referred to on a better footing than '.as been the case hitherto. Previously these streets, which from the continuation of main highways through boroughs, received maintenance subsidy on the same basis as did the adjoining main' highways in the counties; but in future the boroughs concerned will be entitled to a subsidy of £l-10s for each £1 of actual expenditure involved in the maintenance of the, streets, irrespective of the amount, paid by the Main Highways Board to the county councils in respect of the adjoining lengths of main highways.
