UNPROFITABLE VENTURE ENDS IN COURT CASE. t AUCKLAND, Last Night. At the Police; Court to-day William J. Mead was charged with stealing pohutukawa. wood valued at 30/-, the property of the. Tamaki West Road Board, and wilfully damaging pohutukawa 'tree. He pleaded not guilty to both charges. Evidence was given by two employees of the Road Board to the effect that they had'seen Mead in the act of sawing a thick branch off a pohutukawa tree near St. Helier's. A quantity green pohutukawa wood was found in a boat which was being rowed by his son. "You know very well that it is a serious offence to cut green pohutukawa trees," said the Magistrate in fining Mead £lO and cost* on each of two charges. Mead was also ordered to pay 30/- for damage done and £2 witness expenses—a total of £23/10/-.
