* ; EXCELSIOR WIN HOOKEY CUP | Tiio elfort of a sports committee to . provide a Labour l}ay attraction for I tlie local public yesterday was favoured with perfect Vuminer weather—peril tips ti little too warm for Ktrenir..ii;; ■ificld games. There was only a modej rule attendance of spectators, inauy loI cal people preferring to speii'l so lino I a. day in tlio lieach or at other resorts, i 'Die tournament itself, so far as the hockey tournament was concerned wis •a great sporting success, no less than ten teams pubtiug 111 an appearance audi ifijvhtin.il the dtjeision out to tho end. Tho teams were divided, into two sections, each team playing four matches in the preliminary round.. Feilding C and {Excelsior B proved to be £ho better of the A section, and when all the matche; . had been played iit was found that tTns Xevin representatives had a one-point load over til" Feildingites, and wens thus eligible For the frml. It rl-u.s came about thai, 'Excelsior A had 10 meet their dubinates, Excelsior B, in the final, a result that testifies to the strength and combination of the ICxeelsior team. Most credit, however, is due to the ■ B team, who played pluekily throughout the day and at the finish put up a. dogged tattle against the first club team, only suffering defeat to the extent of 2 to nil. The tourney was prolonged till nearly six o'clock owing to some teams nedecting to provide a ball and to delays through players being knocked out, but a lair number of the public stayed on till the finish. The Mayor (Mr D. W. Mat'heeon) then presented the Cup to the captain of the winning team (Mi-X Tuohy) who was loudly cheered on coming forward to take the trophy.
