The Defence Department is advised that •'fte.rgt.-Mec'h'ank-. Raymond George Goldfinch, formerly of -Feilding, at present attached to the I! oval Air Force, has been awarded the lioyal Air Force .Medal. This. ■action, is,necessary by the Borough on account of the "danger of alarming horses, etc;' which may cans© sqrious' accidents.' Experiences from w.c*viou» i and New Year events have | proved to the Council that drastic steps , must b© taken to endeavour to prevent recurrence of the dangerous .practice. ! 'J lie polling at the by-elections on i Thursday was very small compared with { the previous contests, only about ha'f 1 tiio electors going to the poll. In Wellington South the Labour candidate, <Alr : R. iSemple. polled •211? voiets to 1281 cast for .Mr Frost, and 397 for Mr C'as- | tie. The Palmerston .seat was won by j Mr J. A. Nash, who received 2229 votes, | "his opponents being Mr A. Galbraith I ("Labour) 1914. Mr J"). H. Crahb (Indci pendent) '1119, and Mr A. Buchanan 101. Mr Nash stood as a National Government candidate. He is a brother of Mr E. J. Nash, of Levin, and has , been Mayor of Palmerston for the past j eleven years. j Those persons who may liavo- left ! blankets and articles of clothing at tin; Levin Temporary Hospital arc requested to call and obtain same from tho Borough office on or before Monday next. The Borough is anxious to hand to tho rightful owners all goods left oil hand. The Foxton Racing Club gave stakes to the value of £1,275 last year. 'lhe year commenced with a credit -balance of £193 5s 3d, and closed with a credit of £588 9s sa. "which, in view of the fact that last year's meeting was oniy ■a single dnv one, is highly satisfactory. Mr J. R. Why to lias been re-elected President un-opposed. The profit on the race meeting .account- was £892 and £285 was given to Patriotic Funds. Among tho commodities which increased in price during the war, probably none readied the over-normal level of printing paper of all closses. Latest advices indicate that the limit of increase has not yet boon readied. This is shown by a, cablegram just received. This is shown by a Christclrurch firm, to the effect that there has been a further increase in American paper or all grades of four cents, or twopence, per pound. The- same cablegram states that the shipping difficulties will be acute for some time to come. A London cable says : Owing to the cost and difficulty of transportation, it lias bean decided to deutioy the Australian Light Horse horses over twelve years of age. and dispose of the remainder locally. The decision lias occasioned pathetic scenes, men dreading their favourites passing into sla.veiy, are shooting many, finding excuses and insisting that they are over the age, or arranging that they meet with accidents. One brigade shot seven hundred horses one night. Clark's Store will close three da.ys for the Christinas Holidays and on tli:• list and 2nd of January for the New Year, i'lease shop early. Inspired by Levin's modest application for a restoration of its pre-war railway facilities, the Otaki Mail goes a good deal further and demands that Olaki also be a stopping place for the nwiin trunk express, alternately- with Levin, or that if only one stop can be made between l'almerston and Wellington, it be at Otaki. "The Mail also wants to ,s©e "all expresses" stopping at Otaki. These demands all break new ground and do not come with the same recommendation that strengthens Levin's claim, which is merely for a reversion to the privileges it enjoyed in pre-war diiys, tho convenience Mid advantages of which were conceded by tire Department. Our contemporary is on stronger ground in pleading for a revipion and spcoding-up of the ordinary expresses on the Manawatu line. The Mail points out that as regards tho regular services hoc ween Wellington and Fa 1 mere ton North, this district is no better served than it was over thirty years ago, when the old Manawatu Railway Company's lino was first openei. Settlers only thirty miles fn;m Wellington cannot reach the city b>train before 12.15 p.m., while Otaki residents, only 47 miles from Wellington. have t-cf spend five, and a. halif hours in the train in order to secure less than four hours in town. Clark's are offering Women's Millinery and Washing Costumes at a big discount. Get- in early and secure the selection. R. E. Lucas (on active service) thanks the public for support given and adds a reminder that for present time, there i« an excellent selection of gifts at tho book and fancy goods §tore in Oxford street. Allmand's business at the Levin railway. Csusli counts Clark's Drapery Store. See our liberal discounts on Women's Summer Washing Costumes.
