The Epidemic.

SOME FURTHER CASES. Four further cases of influenza have been admitted to the hospital during the past two days. The great majority of rthe oases now being' received, however, are not of so dangerous a character as those dealt with during the earlier stages of the epidemic, and virulent after effects are also much lesn in evidence. Th«s .position on the whole is quite satisfactory and this is supported by the fact that lately the number of fatal cases is showing a considerable reduction in number. Mr J. Hooper, of Queenswood roadi, who was admitted to the hospital a few days ago iia making a rapid recovery. Mr Hyland, of Kimberley road, is still in a rather serious condition. Five convalescent*? were discharged yesterday and ten others have been moved to the convalescent wardi. The total number in hospital at present is 25. Mr Grant, of the Central "Development Farm, who had a bad attack, has practically recovered, and expects to return home tin a few days. Of the many devoted workers Who have given their services freely at the Hospital in the recent crisis, a band of about a dozen have been on duty from the time of opening the institution night up to the present and are still car lying on. ' These are Mesdames Greggan, Edwards and Harris Mioses McDonald, Hall and Jeneon and Mesism Edwards. H. McDonald, B. Bevan, Standring, Rockel and Howard Jones. Mr James Rutherford manager of the Ihakara creamery, who has hacli a serious attack was easier last might and his condition is somewhat better. Mrs Rutherfordi is now well on the way to recovery. " . , Visits to families stricken with the .■dclcness are still being carried out daily. Originally there were nearly thirty families affected in such a way that it wfliS neccssnry to provide them with invalid -food, but the number is being gradually reduced, showing that the epidemic has spent its force. Numbfers of former patients are now convalq-cent and able to look after themselves. iAlr B. R. Gardener and Mr P. W. Goldsmith have been responsible for much good work in making these daily visits, and lately Nurse Gilroy has been going the round* with equally good results. Gifts of soups and food of various kinds for the sufferers from the sickness continue to be received) at the Borough Chambers in liberal quantities. Thg-© generous gifts are very much appreciated and have been of great value during the epidemic. These donations will continue to be received so long <is the present need exists. Mr B. ~R. Gardened", the Town Clerk, who has been untiring in ihis labours during the present epidemic, sustained a break-down through over-work last week, and had to take a few days' rest, lie quite well again and hopes to resume his duties immediately. The death occurred yesterday of the three-year-oldl daughter of Mr and Mrs D. Morgan, of Rcwlyn-road, Levin. The little sufferer was stricken with influenza some days ago and the attack ended fa/tally. Mr Alex. Murray, a member ©f the Horowhenua County Council, is one of the latest victims of the epidemic. His attack is irather a severe one and ho has been removed to the temporary ■hier-pital for treatment.
