| PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT, INFLUENZA. PRECAUTIONS AND WARNINGS. TF persons undertake the following precautions ohere should be very much less risk of taking the illness and [likelihood of complications: PRECAUTIONS. Remain in th© fresh air as much as possible. Avoid too close contact with persons suffering from colds. Absolutely avoid in'iiinate contact — e.g., kissing and dancing. Avoid places where persons congregate—e.g., public meetings, irams, entertainments, etc. Avoid draughts. Always cough or sneeze into a handkerchief. Ul=e a simple spray for the nose aud ; gargle the throat—e.g., Condy's fluid i or any other throat antiseptic, or use ; Forma mint loaenges, etc. j Avoid close contact With persons suf- ' fering from influenza. i Do not remain unnecessarily long ' with patient, as this increases danger i of infection. j Ammoniated liincture of quinine is a • dlrug that is much recommended. j Spray or wipe floor and furniture in I rooms that have been occupied, by infected persons wfth a solution of about ; half a breakfast-cup to a gallon of wa- ! ter of any reliable disinfectant. j PATIENTS. j Go ito bed when feel onset of symp- , tomts, and remain there till all the fever has' completely disappeared. This is the only way of avoiding risk of complications. Isolation should be practiced where possible and only one member of family should visit the patient's room. Destroy sputum, etc., by receiving sputum and nasal secretions into proper receptacles containing 5 per cent carbolic acid or into clothe which after- 1 wards burn. I Keep patient's feeding utensils, etc., separate, and place in boiling water after Vise. Handkerchiefs used by patients sho- J uld be kept separate and well boiled i j after .tise. i Patients should not appeal- in public j places for seven to ten days from the ' onset of the disease, and should be par- j iicularly careful not to sneeze or cough : •without using a handkerchief which has been soaked for an hour in a weak ■ • solution of disinfectant—say, a tea- : spoonful to a pint of water, otherwise , there is danger of infection being ! spread. ' j Light nutritious diet, in recommended. The attendant on the sick person ' should wash her handisin water to which j disinfectant has been added after leav- j ing sick-room and before each meafl. She and the other members of the t household should gargle the Jiroat fre- j quently and douche the nose with mild ; antiseptics.
