Patriotic Garden Party.
It tvas unfortunate that the weather yesterday "should have been quite unsuitable for out-door functions, 'for it affected very considerably the garden party arranged for the Lowry Bay 'Hospital and t'he Levin Bed Oj'ofis Funds. Hadj the conditions .been at lall setv-on-able it is safe to say that one of the biggest successes" yet achieved in the district would have been registered. The scene was the picturesque grounds at "Nga Nikati," the residence of Mr and Jin- F. R. Wright on tlie Gladstone road, and they formed an ideal spot for sndli a function. Within easy motoring distance of town, the "visitor found a pleasure ground whicli nature and art had combined to make attractive. From the terrace in front of the homestead a spacious panorama of the whole countryside with the Lake and the sea both in. the purview could be obtained. The plantations and lawn wore looking at their bei=t in all the glory of early spring audi the azaleas, rhododendrons and other flowering shrubs added a vivid touch of colour to the many shaded greens of the young foliage. In such surroundings it could be imagined that . with kindly treatment from the elements an afternoon might be spent in a most pleasurable manner. Yesterday, boweve, a keen wind with a touch of" winter in it, interfered with the attenI dance and robbed the gathering of much of its enjoyment and enthusiasm. Still business was brisk end as a result of the very complete arrangements made by Mrs Wriglit and her helpers" t'he funds of the two institutions, to be benefited will b e substantially augmented. Competitions, tennis, croquet and a rifle range were the chief centres of attraction while the several stalls and afternoon tea department each_ had a good share of patronage. During the afternoon tlie Mayor conducted a novel sale of "Sections in which was responsible for several acceptable additions- to the revenue. The Levin Band was present and played an enjoyable and appreciated programme of music during the afternoon. Thie ladies who had charge of the different stalls were as follow : Produce stall: Mesdames Oorringe, Yickers and Pronse; sweete : Mesdames Tully and Duncum and Miss Tully ; golf competition : Mesdames Hall' and Porteous; putting competition : Mrs Mackenzie ; afternoon tea: Mesdames Hugh Hal and F. W. Pink; fortune-telling: -'Mesdames Franklyn Webb and Wilson. Mr T. Wriglit, junr., managed the shooting competitions. There were numerous assistants in each case. _ . Mrs Wriglit and those associated with her wisli to gratefully acknowledge the very generous assistance given to t'he effort. In many ways besides tthoPe mentioned above. !help was ungrudgingly given to make the afternoon a success and we are asked to reoord the high appreciation felt of all such cooperation. An especial word of thanks is due to the car-owners who so kindly drove visitors to and fro to the grounds or placed their cars* at thfe disposal or the promoters.
