Three severe earthquakes were experienced early this morning, the first being a few minutes past 4 c?clock, and the others about an hour later.
The Town Clerk notifies Gas Consumers that on account of the 10th falling on Sunday, the last discount day wil be extended till Monday, November 11.
The local lawn tennis season will commence on Saturday next when the Levin Club's courts will be officially opened. Visitors are cordially invited to bo present.
His Grace Archbishop O'Shea, of Wellington, will viwt Levin at the weekend for the purpose of holding a confirmation service at the Catholic Church in Mako Mako road. The sea-vice will take place at 2.30 p.m. and a special sermon, suitable to the occasion will be delivered by Hce Grace.
Questioned In the 'House last night with regard to the rumours currenib in all part® of the country that the Government was in possession of informal tion that peace was actually concluded, the Prime Minister said: "I can assure members, and through them the people of New Zealand, thait when the news of Germany's capitulation comes to hand; it will be published at the earliest possible moment. Not a word on the sub'ject has come through yet. So many people ran'g up my office ithat I got into touch with Government House and the Governor-General told me thgt nothing "had come to him, and that when anything came it would be sent on to me as quickly as passible."
The Postmaster at Levin reports as follows: Owing to interruptions of lines only traffic ait urgent rates is being accepted for stations in the South Island and for all stations north of Taumamnui.
Mrs Stevenson's name was accidcntly omitted from the programe of the Bnlstad benefit concert. Mrs Sto ronton also assisted very considerably in selling tickets.
Arrangements are well forward for the gift afternoon to be held at the residence of-Mr and Mrs Dean, Devon street, next Wednesday, in aid of the. Methodist Church, and a plea Mint afternoon is assured. Among other attractions will be fortune tolling, music and games.' Afternon tea will- bo provided.
A large four-masted schooner, fl.viug the Stars and Stripes, was berthed at Napier the other day. The vessel, which is of 1200 tons, was recently launched on the west coast of America, and; brought over 40,000 cases of kerosene and petrol. The vessel is one of the most up-to-date war boats which has so far visited New Zealand. She is fitted with oil engines capable of developing a speed of live knots, and her winches are operated by -steam. 'Fully laden the vessel draws 23 feet of water.
Considering the unrest created by the sensational events of the past few days there was a good muster of enthusiasts at the meeting held in Mr K. Aitken's room last evening to discuss the advisability of • forming an amateur athletic club. Mr Aitken occupied the chair, and aji informal discussion revealed an strong der-ire to form a dlub and tlva likelihood of a successful: oareer. It was pointed out that Levin i® admirably situated for holding sports meetings, the train arrangements ensuring competitors from both Palmerston North and Wellington besides adjacent town?. It was also mentioned that there would probably be a number of promising athlete® at the Central Development Farm while the local High School wou'ld always supply recruits. In view of the possibiity of early peace and the celebrations in connection therewith it was decided to set up a oommittec whose duty it •will be to assist in arranging and carrying out a sports programme on that auspicious occasion. Arrangements for same were left in the hands of Messrs K. Aitken, W. L. Williams and B. Wilson and the meeting adjourned until such time as the committee's -work is further advanced.
