Allies Sweep Victoriously Forward, AMERICANS FIVE MILES FROM VITAL RAILWAY. . Received this 'day, 10 a.m. London, November 6. Sir [Douglas Haig's report, timed 12. 35 a.m., says: Northward of the Sambre ouir advanced troops pressed forward beyond Mormal forest and reached the main Avesnes-Bavay road isoutßward of Bavay. We also progressed westward of Bavay and other parts of tlie battlefront.
An American communique states : Our First Army crossed the Meu.se south of Dun under a heavy cannonade which frequently wreoke3 our bridges and fought its way up tKe> slopes on the east bank, breaking the enemy's strong resistance. We captured two hills and Chatillon wood and also captured Dun. In the afternoon we pushed a mile beyond. * Another corps reached the river at Cesse Luzy, seized the Forest of Jul--nay, captured Beaumont, advanced two miles beyond. ' • We are now only five miles from the Sedan-Metz railway. A third corps on the left advanced through the rugged forests beyond S tonne. Fifty-one more guns were captured west of the Mouse. Seventeen enemy aeroplanes were shot down in air fights and seven Americans are missing. Sains, Richaumonb and Housset. Further to the right we hold Laneu-Bucy-les-Pierrepont and iDizy-lez-Gros. Heavy fighting northwest of Chateau Porcien also caused a general retreat of the Germans. Our line passes north of Waleppe, Haumogne, west of Ohaudion and St. Fergeux. We captured r Hearpy, Oonde-les-Hearpy and Chateau Porcien. , „ , ~ We crossed the Aisne at Nanteuil, and in the Argonne by a brilliant surprise we, crossed the Ardennes canal and tlie Ajene, passing far beyond Monty on, Le Ohesne and reaching the village® of Pouvergny and Sauville.
