The Levin Chronicle. SATURDAY, OCTOBER. 19, 1918.

Ia oonveraation with n "Chronicle" representative yesterday the Mayor said Jwj. would like to emphasise the appeal to the public to help as far a* possible with tlio pronoseu' improvements at the Lake, The present condition Wilis regarded as souieu'Jiat of a reproadh to a progressive community. Tlio Board .-set out to xemove that reproach and it had, been, confident that tho public would assist it. Ht was thought that a direct and personal appeal would give tho desired result, but 80 circulars ih'adl been sent out and only isome £10 had been subscribed in answer thereto,- though other sums had subsequently been received. That was distinctly disappointing. Money to necessary if these very desirable improvements were to be carried out, and the Board's sources of revenue wore very limited. Until quite recently the sum derived from the reserve of 13 acres liadl been only £10 and it was now £26 so that tlhe Board had not much margin to come 'and go upon. If tilie present direct appeal was not responded, to, it would be either a question of neglecting what was justly looked' on ,as the town's finest asset or taking a sum out of the rates for tho purpose of developing the 'Lake as a recreative awort. The iXlayor disapproved_ of tihe latter course 'because it was desirable that the town should not get the name of being over-burdened with rates, a reputation it certainly did not possess at present, and it therefore seemed the more preferable policy to endeavour to make these improvements by the generosity of the public. Jlr Blenkhorn pointed out that tho town was so well-endowed with reserves that the Borough's -financial resources ivoro ■taxed to tne utmost to give them all some attention. "It seems to me," continued the Mayor, "that there is a certain amount of personal satisfaction in tlhe knowledge that one has helped, in however small degree, with the improvement of our inatural beauty spots, and it gives the individual a more particular interest in the reserve towards winch he liais contributed."
