TOBACCO OR BUTTER
THE FADDY CHIEF JUSTICE. The hours of closing of tobacconists' shops was under discussion at the Supremo Court at Wellington on Thursday, when his Honour the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) took occasion to institute a comparison. '' Ido not know,'' he said, '' why the sale. of tobacco should be specially eared for better than the sale of butter or bread.'' On being told that tho grocers' shops closed at 1 p.m. on Saturdays without any option, his Honour added: "Then a grocer cannot sell a loaf of bread or a pound of butter after that hour. But in OTder to encourage our people to smoke tobacco, tobacconists' shops are kept open until 9 or 10 o'clock at night. That to say, we think our young people are' to be benefitted more by the use of drugs than the use of food. I think people should be able to get all the tobacco they want between 9 o'clock and 1 o'clock in the afternoon."
