County Patriotic Society,
The County Patriotic Association met in Levin yesterday. Present—Messrs C. • Blenkhorn (President), Keediwell (Levin), W. J. Howell (Paraparaumu), Austin (Waikßnae), P. J. Hennessy, G. X. Stephenson and Mrs Gibson (Shannon), L. ;St. J o'liin (ptaki), G. Kilisby (Kopnfcaroa), Nees (Maiia'kau), and i. P. Walk ley (hon. .secretary). Leave of absence was granted to Mr.srrs Penn, Petri©, Eraser, McLean :;:id Goldsmith. ■No action was taken in regard to the application of a returned soldier who had been in hospital 'with a crippled leg since June 1917, and asked far a grant. Jt- was pointed, -out that the Government allowance i'nthis ca.se wn~ £8 13s 4di per month, of \vi)ieh Go 10s was held until the recipient was discharged, the other £2 3i• -id being pnid over as pocket money. The applicant wished a grant towards providing himself with a civilian outfit on his discharge, but as Ms accumulated pay held by the Government had amounted to about £100 and would be available on his daisciharge while the Government also made an allowance of £5 5s towards the provision of civilian- clothing, the case was not a necessitous' one. The Government policy was also against 'aliowing hospital patients too much) money. The applicant ihaYl ho claim on the district as hie had been away from it for five years before the war and enlisted in Samoa. , The Te Horo Society forwarded its I quarterly remittance of £25.—'Received with thanks. I An application was received irom i a camp chaplain of the Salvation Army 1 for >a small sum to relieve the lm- ' mediate necessities of a soldier s wife who hadi incurred expense in a nursing home. The soldier had lived in this district and at Foxton hut had enlisted from Hawke's Bay. It was decided to forward £5, half of tlie amount suggested and to advise that tJhe other societies interested! be applied to for the balance required. The Levin Patriot)!® Society forwarded £45 made up of £30 Bs, the 'result of two Shop Days ihekl by the 'Levin Rod Cross Committee of Ladies, and £15 lis the result of a patriotic benefit given by the proprietors of •Everybody's theatre.—Received witlh l thanks. „ , , tl Mr W. -T. He had been contributing to the support of his sisters in Scotland, one of whom was now in bad'health. They had enquired from the High Commissioner in 'London and had heen informed that the N.Z. pension law did not provide for soldiers sifters liv'ng out of the Dominion.
