DEMOS WINS FLYING HANDICAP
DETROIT, MEMORIAL STAKES.
The annual. Spring Meeting of the. Otaki Maori Racing Club was held yesterday in glorious weather. The attendance was large and the racing excellent, heads separating the placed horses in several of the races, giving Mr Hartgill, the judge, a difficult task to sort . the winner out. The winners were well concealed by the handicapper (Mr H. .Coyle), only one first favourite winning all day, and that being the high.priced Kipling, who won the Maiden Stakes fairly easily. This well-bred half-brother to Bobrikoff ia a good looking colt, and his owner should easily get his" money back before the season closes. Demos and Detroit both won their races nicely at the finish, both paying fair prices. There was an unfortunate mix up in •the Steeplechase, which ended in the unlucky King's Park losing his lif#. He was going well at the time but had no chance with the winner. W. D. Young, the rider of Hoatu, had several ribs broken and it will be some time before his able to ride again. Mr Harley's starting was excellent and he is to be complimented on the prompt manner in which he got his fields away. The totalisator worked smoothly and there was not much delay, although the last race was .started a few minutes late. Mr B. Ling, the club's president, was very attentive to visitors and Mr O. J. D'Ath, the secretary,. and his officials worked hard all day and under their guidance everything worked smoothly. Mr C. Gordon wa B present in his official capacity as Stipendiary Steward, but had a clean sheet to report at the end of-the day. Messrs Dustin's, Ltd., of Palmerston North and Wanganui, put on an excellent luncheon and afternoon tea. The totalisator handled £20,366 during the day.
