Horowhenua County Council.
The usual meeting of the Horowhe- i nua, Ooamty Council was held to-day. Present—Crs Monk (in the chair). Cat-. ; ley. Murray, MciLesivey, Law, Wliyte, Bryant and Ryder. Leave of absence was granted, to Cr Broadibelt. > COItBESPOXDiBNCB. The Dominion Secretary of tli'o Farmers' Union forwarded a resolution of ,v the Dominion Conference, urging the erection of finger posts at all important junctions of roads for tlio guidance of the travelling public.—frho Chairman pointed out that some had been erected andi others were- wilder ' consideration. . • The Manager of the May Morn Estate wrote asking when the extension of the Otaki Gorge road would be taken in hand.—Loft* to the 'Crs. for the riding. Mr W. S. Carter wrote tasking wblethertlie Council would allow telephone. ; . wires to be carried along the eidies of : tlie Wirokino Bridge.—Bridge not controlled by Council. Mr Stewart Mackenzie wrote stating the Mangaone creek had oarriedl away ■ a portion of 'his boundary at To 'Horo, and he asked for permission to re-erect the fence further on to the_ road;—-Left , with Or. Catley to deal with. Mr E. Moran', formerly ranger to the Kairanga County Council, wrote claim- • ing 16s 9d, impounding fees for cattle impounded by him in the Tokomaru pound.—Attended to. 4 ' - Mr T. Morgan, Otaki, wrote re mon- > ■ ey withheld] on account of Katihikii drain, stating that the work to be ,! done was only of th'o value of '10s iandi he thought the deposit - would bo eufficient to cover that until the drain wis - low 1 enough to allow the work to ibe - done.—No'action taken. ; The Town Olerk of Shannon wrote asking! for a grant for improving the 1 Shannon cemetery as it. was a county concern as much as that of the Borough, The Borough had put £50 on its estimates towards the work.—The • Clerk said the Tokomarui riding had"' taken over ia debit of £10 Cs 6d on the cemetery .at March-31. iMost of i cemeteries .in the County were _ finan-i ced by the sale of plots.—-iNo, action ta-. ~ I ken for the present. • f ftVelve ratepayers of Mana'kau .askedl I that a special rating ditsrict bo formed for a proposed water race at Manakiau. .Referred to Civ. for riding; with power to act. ~ The solicitors for thte MdD.onald Estate forwarded plans of the, roads laid off and formed through part of the Estate near Levin, which tho Council had agreed, to take a<s public roads. The Trustees audi other owners of tho 'lands , wiere prepared to forthwith dedicate the troads for tho purpose of a public road. Small parts.of the road were owned 1 by native owners! and it would be necessary to take these under tho Public Works Act, the Trustees indem- .. nifying the Council against any claim for compensation mado by the native owners through whose" land the small, part of the road passes.—Tho Council agreed to affix its seal on 1 the completion of plane.
