Golf.

Although opened late in the' season tlie Itinks have been well patronised. The country is not idieal for golf, being flat, but in the opinion of players this is compensated for by the Jinks being easy for ladies and therir proximity to the town is also a valuable feature. The fairway to holes 3 and 8 were rather wet for a time owing to the heavy rains of July, but the wlbole of the ground is now perfectly _ dry, and will remain so unless exceptionally heavy rains cause a spring to flow which was the cause of the trouble. A little improvement in the drains would improve matters considerably. The first competition held on the liniks was a handicap 9 holes for'ladies for a golf club, which wais won by Mrs Porter. The following are the scores, the handicaps being deducted from the total score: Mrs. Porter 90 25 65 Mrs Mackenzie 71 5 66 Miss V. Adkin 93 25 68 Mrs Claris 72 scr 72 Miss Beckett . 83 8 7o JJ men's handicap competition is to be played to finish on September 21 for tropihiy presented by Mr Mackenzie. The following handicaps have been declared by Mr Hughes, the handicapper : D. S. Mackenzie 5, E. W. Clark 5, G. 0. Noble 5, W. Hughes 8, H. lE. Porter 10, J. Hill 12, H. B. France 16, T.
