NEXT SATURDAY'S EFFORT

Next Saturday promises to be a big event at tlie local Red Cross Shop, when the ladies of the Levin Croquet Club will take charge of the day's operations. They decided at a recent meeting of the Club to devote the proceeds of the day to the Y.M.C.A. Trench Comfort Fund. Various sub-committees have been strenuously working for some weeks past preparing goods getting together an immense amo-, unt of saleable articles. The sweets stall, now quite a feature of these occasions, will be in charge of Mrs Whitaker, assisted by Mrs Jones, ".also Miss Whitaker and Miss Herrick. _ Mrs Whitaker's achievements in the past in the inanufacture of sweets have become so well known that this department does not need further recommendation. A cake gulessing ■competition in connection with the Stall will be under tlie cave of Mrs Port.eons. A,t the Shop one of the main attractions will be the cake competition, which is announced in the Shop advertisement to-day and which will be in charge of Mesdames Clark and Hill. The shop will be controlled by Mrs Sidney Hall and heir assistants, Mesdames Pollock, Hiigh Hall, Gardener and Mackenzie. _ _ A '"'Dolls' House" competition, the subject of Avhich is hi Mrs H. Hall's window, will be in the care of Mrs Lancaster, who also expects to have a quantity of flowers to dispose of. The President of the Club, Mrs Kirk, will also be among the day's workers, as she will take charge of several interesting competitions. She has also arranged to hold a gift tea- at her residence in Winchester street to-morrow afternoon (Wednesday) a<t which a big gathering is expected . " Altogether the effort promises l:o be something out of the ordinary, and should yield a goodly sum for the' Y.M.C.A.
