A Dramatic Moment.
The Cape Times (South Africa) describes "an unprecedented spectacle in Ihe streets of Capetown and suburbs. An appeal was made by the Mayor that at the midday hour all citizens should desist from their occupations and observe a short spell of silence "in order to direct," as the appeal read, '' the minds of the people to the tremendous issues which are being fought cut on the Western front, and to afford a minute or two for silent prayer, for the forces of the Allies engaged there." The Mayor's appeal concluded: "I cannot conceive anything more calculated to bring homo to us the critical time throuh which we are passing and its responsibilities for all of us, and 1 hope most fervently that all our citizens will help to make the recognition of the solmonity of the occasion as real as possible." The Cape Times states: "Many responded loyally to the appeal. In Adderley street, which is generally filled at the noon-hour with hundreds of business men and others on their way to lunch, the effect of the gun and the 'Last Post' sonuded by a bugler belonging to the visiting forces from the balcony of Cartwight's had the the effect of immediately arresting traffic, vehicular or pedestrian. Tramcars, motor cars, and other vehicles at once came to a stop, and all heads uncovered for a space of a minute or two. It was a dramatic moment. Perfect silence superseded the usual din of traffic in the street, and one felt that the passers-by realised the Solemnity of the occas : on."
