A City of Amazons.
How womankind dominates tho London landscape, almost to the exclusion of men, is the theme of a diverting description of alleged present-day life in the British capital contributed to the " Lokal-Anzeiger" by a neutral recently in England. Aftor referring to the "dreary wilderness" which London now resembles in the evening hours, the neutral writes:— "It is hardly imaginablo to what an extent the feminine element now predominates in London. One really comes to believe he has landed in a city of Amazons. England has for generations had an enormous surplus of f women, but during the war this has bccomc an astounding and even alarming manifestation. In a way it deletes the triumph of feminism, which, like a stream in flood, overflows and carries all before it. Moreover, it is not Englishwomen of sacred tradition in frills and feathers and gay furbelows, but Englishwomen in every conceivable sort of uniform that ono now encounters —the khaki Waacs, the blue-clad tube and omnibus girls, the postwomen ,tho motor drivers, and even women police and 'firemen.' "Englishwomen in uniform have faces of uncompromising seriousness. Like English character itself, one and all of them arc taciturn and solemn. The Frenchwoman's war aspect is tempered with a little of her natural delicacy and coquetry. The Englishwoman personifies the gravity of the j hour for all to see. One would still gallantly kiss the hand of the little French war-woman. For the English war-woman one can muster up nothing but formal respect."
