200 Square Miles Abandoned.
GEItMANS BACK TO DEFEN SIYE. Paris, August 5. Since Friday the Germans Have retreated between seven and eiglit miles along the ltheims—Soissons front, evaciiating nearly two hun dred square miles in 48 hours, leaving thousands of unburied dead and millions of rounds of ar iillery ammunition and vast quan itities of other material. Critics consider the withdrawal beyond tlie Vesle together with the retirement on - the British front indicates Germany's decis ion definitely to abandon offensive tactics. ■ The present battle has marked a complete Change in the methods of warfare.' Infantry can be seen marching, along the roads instead of creeping up communication trenches ijiid saps and wriggling through barbed wire. Widely ex tended cavalry scouts precede the infantry,, holding and spreading out over fields, passing in and out of thickets and seeking out enemy detachments and machine gun nests.
