Retreat Continues.
GEIIMANS MAY GO BEYOND THE AISNE. Received this (lay, 10 a.m. London, August 5. Th.o enemy lias retired to tlie north, bank of the Vesle ■ and the French have crossed the river in four places despite stubborn resis tance by strong rearguards who destroyed most of the bridges. « Thfe French have further pro gressed in the neighbourhood of SoiasoQS,, capturing the suburb of Saint West, giving control of the river, bend puat of the town. Thp Germans are withdrawing opposite the British front between Montdidier and Moreuil. The British following up occupied the villages of Hamel, .Demanet and Dernancourt. . The situation generally is re garded as highly satisfactory. There are indications that the en emy does 'not intend making a permanent stand on the Aisne and will probably retreat to Chemin des Dames which is one of the strongest positions in France. Meanwhile lie is endeavouring to hold up the French advance while withdrawing vast accu(mu lations of stores and munitions. New York, August 5, The Germans are making a stand along a portion of the Vesle river. Wet weather is favouring them. ' General Mangin's army so far has captured 5l)0 cannon. The French have reached.. the railway station between .Montdi dier and Amifens.
