Under the heading of "For Our Boys" a lady jreader of the "Chro nicle" writes "Mr Gardener made a .suggestion a short time ago re having a box in some convenient posilfon ,in the town in which could be placed magazines for onr soldiers. ' I trust that this excel lent idea will be carried into eft'eel as soon as possible, for I aim sure that many people will wel come this opportunity of passing on their magazines while the news in them is fresh. I enclose a, small donation towards its installation in the hope that others will do likewise." The sum of two sliil lings was enclosed. The suggested receiving box for magazines is one that must commend itself to all and the "Chronicle" will be glad to receive small sums to be Used in establishing the box and, if there is a surplus, perhaps in fur nisliing ilie first consignment of books "for our boys."

Mr G. W. K. Kenrick, S.M. for this district, lias been transfer x-ecl to Botorua. His successor has not yet been appointed.
The ho{mestead iljlock in the Ivirkcaldie estate, which was pass ed in at auction last Wednesday, has been sold privately to Mr Walter Kilsby, of Otaki and for merly of Himatangi.
Mr P. A,. D. >Mickle, school master at Manakau, who has been health recruiting in Palmerston, has returned home, but is still far from well. He has been incapa eitated for duty for ten weeks..
The Copper Trail from Welling ton northwards has now reached Otaki —146 miles—whereas at the Auclcland end, the trail has rea ched the 175t1i mile peg —Tau maranui.
The Hon. W. D. S. McDonald, Minister for Agriculture,_ and Sir James Carroll were Visitors to Levin during the week end. They were the guests of Mr and Mrs T. Bevan, of Mako Mako road. Mr McDonald returned to Welling ton vesterdav and Sir <Tames Car roll left for "Napier by the express to day.
The main road between Foxton, Levin and Shannon has been under water more or less continuously for the past two months. The Palmerston Times remarks that if a live {body like the Kniranga. County Council had this road within its boundaries it would have been remedied 20 years ago.
" Mr Cyril Day, of the lieail office staff of "Messrs Abraham and AVil liams, Ltd., lias been appointed acting manager of the firm's Levin branch and will take up his duties shortly. MrF. J. Nicholson, the nresent manager, who was recently drawn in the Class C ballot, lias been passed fit for active service.
Nominations for the positions of representatives of the Horowhenua Oountv and the towns within its borders on the Palmerston Hoe pi«a-l Board close at the County and Boroueh offices, Levin to morrow. Though the meeting ox local body delegates recently sel ected three candidates,it is quite open, of course for any elector, apart from those chosen, to secure nomination.
During the quarter ended June 30, the Magistrate's Court sat m Levin six times, the Magistrate presiding on three occasions and justices three times. Twenty four civil cases were heard, the aggre gate amount sued for being ±<34ti 17s 6d and the amount recovered being. £222 8s (3d. Five judgment- summonses were issued and 31 summonses and processes ser ved.
At last meeting of the Levin Patriotic Society a letter was received front the Manager of Everybody's Theatre, in which ho wrote offering to give a benefit performance of pictures aim musical items for the County Patriotic Fuiid'oa August 0, and as the offer was considered a most liberal one tlie Committee decided in take advantage of it. Messrs Gardener and Hughes were depu ted to confer. with XTi* Scott in arranging the details. , Mr J.D. Brown had sufficiently recovered from the effects of the motor accident that occurred on Thursday, to be able to preside at the annual meeting of the Jiuku Dairy Co., of which lie is chair man'of directors, yesterday. Mrs Brown is also making good pro cross and fears whicli were enter tained at first that she had suffer fid injuries to the spine, have happily proved unfounded. Mrs J. McDonald, who was also thrown out'of the car and received auch severe injuries to her head that she had to be taken to the Otaki Hospital, is reported to be doing well.
The five boys who made good their escape from the Weraroa Training Farm on Thursday even ing, as reported in last issue ox the "Chronicle," went on to Qtaki, and were not long m ma kins tjheir presence fejlt. lne Mail says that almost on arrival they broke into Messrs Winter burn and Jones's camp at Waitohu where thev helped themselves, to a quantity of provisions, a gun anil ammunition. Shortly after this adventure, two of the lads -ixr 10 captured on the road by Mr Win terburn, and Constable bather ey was acquainted with the fact that three other lads were at large, llie officer set out eurlv in the evening and bv 2,30 a.m. on Sunday found n snug camping gr6und on tJie banks of' the Waitohu stream, near Mrs Simcox's summer resi dence. The boys had broken info the building and helped themsel ves liberally. They had secured a tent, candles, tables, utensils, and otherwise made provision for what they considered would be about a fortnight's stay. On Constable Satherley's arrival at the cajmp, two of the boys were found slum bering peacefully, and they were not inclined to bestir themselves until the officer satisfied i-hem. very forcibly as to his identity. They were taken into .custody. Asked where their mat© was, they calmly replied ,that be ™sout with: the intention of committing burglary at Messrs Bills _ and Moore's premises. It is believed that the missing lad, a Maori, lias made his way further soiitli and is in the Porirua locality. captured boys were ; brought to the Farm on Sunday night> - , Mr A.
