Presbyterian Mission Sale
Under the auspices of the Pres-bytdria-n Women's Missionary Union, with Mrs Bawden Harris, as President, a successful gathering was inaugurated in the Presbyterian Schoolroom on Wednesday afternoon and evening. The proceedings were opened by the Minister, who in a few sentences outlined the spheres of mission work undertaken by the Presbyterian Church in China, India, Africa and the New Hebrides, where medical, educational and | evangelistic- work is being carried on. The effort of the day was to increase the amounts given by the local congregation towards this important phase of the Church's work. He trusted their lahours would be crowned with success and had pleasure in declaring the sale open. Good business was done (luring the afternoon, and during the evening quite a number greeted the performers at the rendering of the programme of music hastily arranged, while competitions kept, matters moving and_ created much interest. A varied program consisting of songs, duets and recitations by well known artists met with great applause, encores being freely demanded. Quite a variety "of produce, fruit and poultry, as well_ as articles of apparel were on view and a clearance' was made by the closing hour. The receipts were considered quite satisfactory. The following ladies were in charge of the Sewing and produce, Mesdames Portcous and Bagrie; sweets, Misses C. Blackburn and J. Murray; refreshments, Mesdames W. R. Simpson and Oag, with helpers, Misses Stewart, Ivy -Tenson and M. Murray; competitions, Miss Murray. Those who contributed to the program were Miss Murray, Miss Walker, Mr Mottersholad, Mr James (songs), Messrs Mottersliead and James (duet with banjo accompaniment). Mr James gave a fine exhibition of whistling. Recitations were given by Messrs W. Thomson and K. Aitken and Miss Keys. The Secretary and Treasurer of the Union, Mrs J. Stevenson, deserves mention for the way she worked up this effort in so short a space of time. The Rev. Bawden Harris moved a vote of thanks to all the friends who assisted to make the function the success it proved to be and this was carried with acclamation.
