Red Jersey Appeal.

SPECIAL DAY AT RED

CROSS SHOP

Those ladies, Mesdames Tickers and Cork, who had charge of operations at the Red Ctoss Shop last Saturday have every reason to feel most gratified with the result of their efforts. The Red Cross Committee had decided, beforehand, to devote the day s takings to the "lied Jersey" appeal and when, after a strenuous day's work, the spoil was counted up, it was found that close upon £42 had been gathered in. Several interesting competitions had been arranged, all of which assisted considerably m swelling the clay's takings. The sponge cake entries numbered 14 and the judge, Miss McKegg, found herself confronted with some splendid exhibits, her final choice resting on Miss Edna Clark's entry, which, was awardeel the trophy so generously provided by Mrs I ordHutchinson. The second prize, Mrs Goldsmith's trophy, became Mrs Ranald McDonald's property, the prize being subsequently handed back. Two entries were made by children and both were most commendable. Another competition which caused a good deal of speculation, and yielded some very varied estimates wr.s the weight-guessing on Master Normtni Vickers nuggety li-Jlo. po::y "Paddy" wlio tcok the sudden interest in his proportions all in good part. According to the railway weighing platform, Paddv turned the scale at 361 lbs, and tliree speculators, who apparently based their estimate on the number of clays in the year put down 3Gslbs eacli. These three were Miss Bo wen, Mr Howard Jones and Mr H. Thomson, and the draw-off fell to Miss Bowen. She , promptly handed the special prize of £1 Is, given by Mr Vickers, | over for the benefit of the fund. The second prize was also handed" in. A very tempting six-course dinner from'soup to fizz, provided by the ladies in charge of the shop, proved a big draw, yielding in entries £4 (is. The lucky winner proved to be Mrs Hugh Hall. The cake competition fell to Mrs R. E. Lucas and the necklace to Miss 1). Perkins. Another innovation that assisted the day s takings to the extent of close on £'T was the sale of ribbons organised by Mrs Cork. Able assistance in the shop was afforded by Miss A. Wilson and Miss V. Adkin, while the Vickers family from the genial W.G. downwards all clid good work. The list of contributors, which is a lengthy one, is as follows: Mesdames R. Prouse, E.Webb, C. Blenkhorn, Or.
