IN THE DEFENCE FORCE

Anomalies in the pay received by military officers was the subject of considerable comment by the Chairman of the Defence Expenditure Commission (Sir Bobert Anderson), when Colonel Gibbon, C.G.S., was giving evidence yesterday. He read a list giving the contrast between the pay and allowances of officers in the Training Camps and at Headquarters, where, the official list stated, expenses are infinitely higher. The total amounts of pay and allowances was shown as one in ell cases. The list was as follows: —Officers at- Headquarters Colonel Tate £786 10s, Colonel Chaffey £786 10s, Lieut.-Colonel Hunter (dental) £536 10s, Lieut.-Colonel Sleeman £536 10s, Major Andrews £511 10s, Major Nuttsford £511 10s, Major Wallingford £486 10s, Major Osborne-Lily £486 10s, Captain Bryan £386 10s, Captain Cross £386 10s, Captain Cossgrove £386 10s, Captain Gibbs £386 10s, Captain Bockstrow £355 17s 6d, Lieutenant Jervis £311 10s, 19 lieutenants (area offieers) £257 10s each, 4 second lieutenants (area offij cers), £255 10s each.
