A farmer in Palmerston, Olago, writing to his brother in Masterton, says: "I am just carrying on the farm (800 acres) on my own since my boy went with the forces two years ago. My two eldest girls do all the'shepherding and cow work, audi attend to the cropping; but wheat growing doesn't pay , owing to the demands of labour tlii: ; year. Two shillings and sixpence per hour was deif thev couldn't make £ P cr day they left. Thus, -with the increased cost of manures, sacks, twine, etc., the question of wheat-growing will be a problem to solvo for someone."
